I wished to say something positive about doubt and I thought this large and heavy slate block was the right piece of stone to suggest it keeps one grounded. The lettering is from an alphabet that I saved when we were clearing the Abney Park Cemetery workshop that has now sadly closed for refurbishment. This alphabet has a medieval feel to it. The design was created by measuring carefully and using my eye before transferring to the smooth concave front of this block with carbon paper. Alongside this stone carving, I used the design of this piece to make stencils and have made some paintings with this same design which is a new step for me - to make paintings using a design I intended for stone.
